Whitby is a place filled with ancient history. People have lived here for millenia and as a result Whitby is home to it's fair share of folklore and legend - as well as plenty of interesting stories grounded in fact!

Rose Rylands is Whitby's resident storyteller. She's been telling tales of Whitby's past for years, running guided walking tours, family-friendly ghost walks and taking schools and groups on educational trips around Whitby and the Esk Valley.

Guided Tours of Whitby

It is rich in local anecdote and legend, the guided walk brings to life this fascinating, ancient town and its surrounding area. Full of fun, fact, folklore and amazing tales informed by local knowledge.

Rose's Guided Tours of Whitby are available by private booking online, with pricing as follows:

  • 75 minute tours of Whitby cost £45 for couples
  • 75 minute tours of Whitby cost £65 for smaller groups (up to ten members)
  • 75 minute tours of Whitby for larger groups exceeding 10 members costs £6.00 per adult and £4 child (under 14)
  • Half day £150
  • Discounts available for educational groups and large parties

The tour starts from St. Mary's church at the top of the 199 steps or any other pre arranged meeting place. The tour normally lasts around 75 minutes but bookings can be tailored to suit your requiredments.

These informative and educational walks run along the Esk valley, stopping at riverside cafes or to picnic in beauty spots. All distances, age groups and pace catered for. Return by train or hired minibus.

Esk Valley Tour - Option 1

Walk from Whitby along the railway and riverside at a leisurely pace, stopping to listen to stories of Whitby and how the river and railway have influenced the town. Arrive at riverside cafe at Ruswarp for food and drinks, then take a leisurely amble back to Whitby. Distance: 3 miles, suitable for all abilities and ages. No hills or climbing.

Esk Valley Tour - Option 2

Walk from Whitby along the railway and riverside to Ruswarp the across the fields, dropping down into Sleights. Follow valley trail to Grosmont where the steam trains run. Picnic along the way or have lunch in the pub or one of the fantastic cafes in the village before catching the train back to Whitby. There will be stops throughout the walk to hear old myths and stories of the valley, its villages and inhabitants. Distance: 8 miles. For the more able walker who wants to really feel they have stretched their legs. Some hills and steep paths.
