Musicport Festival - 50 Acts, 5 Stages, 1 Weekend of the Best in World Music - and it's in Whitby!

Musicport has been running for years and is now one of the best world music festivals anywhere in the UK - and probably the world!

This year's festival kept up the fantastic standard that previous events have set - featuring a wonderful array of acts from around the globe playing in various locations within Whitby's Spa Pavillion as well as elsewhere in the town.

The Musicport festival had become a permanent fixture in Whitby's musical calendar, drawing in visitors from all parts of the country, and further afield. Tickets regularly sell out - ensuring a wonderfully busy and bustling atmosphere at all of the weekend's events.

This year there was also a series of free events running alongside the main festival, called Musciport Fringe - based at La Rosa Hotel near the Whale Bones.

And of course, you're more than likely to spot a performer or two out on the streets of Whitby too:

"Musicport was established in 2000 to promote live music and music education in Whitby and the surrounding area with its primary event being Musicport World Music Festival each autumn. Over the last ten years the festival has grown year on year and has established itself as a prestigious event in the festival calendar attracting major names such as Rachid Taha, The Buena Vista Social Club presents Cachaito Lopez etc, Toumani Diabate, Levellers,Misty In Roots, Courtney Pine, Talvin Singh, Richard Hawley, Hugh Masekela,  Chumbawamba, Altan,  Mory Kante, Osibisa, Kate & Anna McGarrigle, & Los De Abajo."

"As well as the festival we also run a regular concert programme (The Compass Club) both in Whitby  Artists who have appeared as part of our concert programme in the past include Jah Wobble’s Invaders Of The Heart, Midge Ure, Daby Balde , Yusa, The Easy Star All Stars, Hazel O’Connor, Asere, Black Umfolosi, Sharron Shannon, Waterson Carthy, & Kate Rusby."
